Instructions for smell training with nose plugs

On the inside of the box you will find a calendar that will help you to structurally carry out the training. Read these carefully before you start training. The schedule consists of smelling 4 scents per day, 2 scents in the morning and 2 scents in the evening. This should be repeated 5 days a week for a period of 8 consecutive weeks.

  1. Always start by cleaning your hands. This ensures that you avoid possible irritation or infection.
  2. Find a quiet place where there are no other strong odors so that you can optimally concentrate on the scents of the NOSA plugs.
  3. Carefully insert the first scented nasal plug into your nose. Apply gently into the nostrils until the bracket touches the nasal wall. Breathe normally through the product.
  4. Set a timer for 10 minutes. During this time, concentrate on the smell. Try to remember what the scent is supposed to smell like. Visualization can help strengthen your memory of the smell. If necessary, use the app that shows associated images so that you can properly visualize the scents.
  5. Once the first session is complete, gently remove the scented nasal plug from your nose and place the next plug on the lid according to the schedule. Repeat the process and set a timer for another 10 minutes.
  6. Follow the same steps for the evening session. The scents for the evening session are always different from the morning session.

For what period should I train with the nose plugs?

The prescribed treatment period covers 8 weeks, during which you have to smell 4 different scents every day, which amounts to a total of 40 minutes of training per day. The advice is to divide the training into 4 sessions of 10 minutes, 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. Each session you train with a different scent, each lasting 10 minutes.

Smell training with the support of the NOSA smell training app

In addition to the smell training set, you can use the NOSA smell training app which supports you with the training. The app is available in English and it includes creating a schedule and reminders so that the training will be performed consistently.

With smell training it is important to visualize the smells, with the help of the app you can see images that correspond to the smells. This will enhance the experience and results of the training.

It is also possible to keep a logbook and notes in the NOSA smell training app, this way you can record the progress of the training.

What is smell training?

Smell training, also called olfactory training, is a proven method to improve people’s sense of smell. Regularly exposing oneself to different scents and focusing on identifying them can improve one’s ability to recognize different scents.

Smell training is especially effective for people with a reduced sense of smell, such as those who suffer from anosmia (complete loss of smell) or hyposmia (reduced sense of smell). Olfactory training can also be interesting for people who can smell but want to train their sense of smell even better. This may be important, for example, for panel members who have to assess food and drinks for their smell and taste in the food industry, or for people in the perfume industry or in dangerous professions where it is important that dangerous odors are smelled optimally.
