Cross cylinder for subjective refraction, available in different strengths. Cross Cylinder Examination (also known as Jackson Cross Cylinder) is an examination used to refine astigmatic refraction by refining the axis and strength of astigmatism. Although a rough estimate can be obtained via retinoscopy or automated refractometry, cross cylinder examination remains invaluable in fine-tuning the refraction for best vision.

Jackson Cross Cylinder

In 1887, Edward Jackson described a method of detecting astigmatism using modified Stokes lenses. He modified this further in 1907 to detect the axis of astigmatism using a cross cylinder. This cross cylinder lens with handle is called Jackson cross cylinder. The cross cylinder technique takes its name from the fact that each of these cylinders can be thought of as the combination of two equal but opposite astigmatic lenses, positioned perpendicularly between them. The sphere in the lens is double and has an opposite power to the cylinder.
